Psittacus

Here is today's distich by Martial, 14.73. This is another one of those delightful epigrams in which something - in this case, a parrot - speaks to us in first-person.

Psittacus a vobis aliorum nomina discam:
Hoc didici per me dicere CAESAR AVE.

For others' names your lessons may avail;
I taught myself to carol, "Caesar! hail!"
- Elphinston

Here is the vocabulary:

psittacus - parrot
a - from, by
vos - you
alius - other, another
nomen - name
disco - learn
hic - this, this one
per - through, by
ego - I , me
dico - say
Caesar - Caesar
aveo - hail, be well
