Causa Latet

Here is today's emblem and distich by Joachim Camerarius, 4:27. You can read about the ancient legend of the "remora," the "delaying fish," at the Bestiary site.

Causa Latet
Sistere currentem remora alta per aequora navim
Fertur; sic vis est maxima in exiguis.





The vocabulary is keyed to the DCC Latin Vocabulary list. There are three words which are not on the DCC list:

exiguus -a -um - small, paltry, meager, scanty
remora, f. - delay; remora fish
sistō, -ere, sistitī - stop, cause to stand, set up

aequor aequoris n.: level surface, sea, plain
altus -a -um: high, lofty; deep
causa -ae f.: cause, reason
currō currere cucurrī cursum: run
ferō ferre tulī lātum: bear, carry
in: in, on (+ abl.); into, onto (+ acc)
lateō latēre latuī: lie hidden, be hidden
māximus -a -um: greatest; māximē: most, especially, very much
nāvis -is f.: ship
per: through (+acc.)
sīc: in this manner, thus; sīc . . . ut: in the same way as
sum, esse, fuī: be, exist
vīs f.: force; (acc.) vim, (abl.) vī; (pl.) vīrēs, strength
