Esse bonum dico...

Here is today's Rhyming Distich, and here are some more posts with Rhyming Distichs. This one comes from the Florilegium Gottingense edited by Voigt.

Esse bonum dico, quod donas laetus animo;
Quod tristis donum, hoc nequit esse bonum.

The vocabulary is keyed to the DCC Latin Vocabulary list. There is only one word in this poem that is not on the DCC list:

nequeo, -īre, nequīvī or nequiī - be unable, cannot

animus -ī m.: spirit, mind
bonus -a -um: good
dīco dīcere dīxī dictum: say; causam dicere, plead a case; diem dicere, appoint a day
dōno -āre: present with a gift (+ acc. of person and abl. of thing)
donum -ī n.: gift, present
hic, haec, hoc: this; hōc, on this account
laetus -a -um: glad, joyful
qui, quae, quod: who, which, what; quis quid: who? what? which?
sum, esse, fuī: be, exist
tristis -e: sad, solemn, grim
