Ne Improviso

Here is today's emblem and distich by Joachim Camerarius, 3:27. As you can see in the emblem, the crane was supposed to use a sly strategy for staying awake while on guard: the crane would hold up a rock with one leg so that, if the crane fell asleep, the rock hitting the ground would wake him up.

Ne Improviso
Excubias vigilanter agas, tibi ne irruat hostis:
Ceu vigil exemplo te monet ordo gruum.

Here is the vocabulary:

ne - so that not, lest, don't
improviso - unexpectedly, without warning
excubia - watch, vigil
vigilanter - alertly
ago - lead, conduct, do
tu - you
irruo - rush on, attack
hostis - enemy
ceu - as, just as, like
vigil - watchman
exemplum - model, example
moneo - warn, advise
ordo - row, order, rank
grus - crane
