Propriis Non Parcit Alumnis

Here is today's emblem and distich by Joachim Camerarius, 4:24. Pike are indeed cannibalistic fish, which Camerarius invokes here as a metaphor for the way that human beings have a propensity to destroy other members of the "human family" as it were.

Propriis Non Parcit Alumnis
Lucius in proprium ut sua viscera congerit alvum,
Sic ipsi sese conficiunt homines.

Here is the vocabulary:

proprius - one's own
non - not, no
parco - spare, show mercy
alumnus - nursling, young
lucius - "wolf fish," pike
ut - as
suus - reflexive possessive
viscus - entrails, flesh, offspring
congero - collect, heap up, consign
alvus - belly, stomach
sic - thus
ipse - emphatic adj/pronoun
se - reflexive pronoun
conficio - consume, kill, chop up
homo - person, man
