Solum A Sole

Here is today's emblem and distich by Gabriel Rollenhagen, Book 1:92, with an English rendering by George Wither. Elsewhere in his emblem, Rollenhagen uses the rays of the sun to indicate the presence of God.

Solum A Sole
Cum solum a sole fecundum, ager omnis ab illo
Fertilis, et frugum munere feta Ceres.

The Ground brings forth all needfull things
But, from the Sunne, this vertue springs.

Here is the vocabulary:

solum - only
a - from, by
sol - sun
cum - when, since
fecundus - fruitful, fertile
ager - field
omnis - all, every, whole
ille - that, that one
fertilis - fertile, abundant
et - and
frux - crops, produce
munus - gift
fetus - full of, fertile, bringing forth
Ceres - goddess of crops, crops
