Virtutis Amor, Non Opum Studium

183     -     184     -     185

Virtutis Amor, Non Opum Studium
Semper opum studio praefer virtutis amorem;
Non opibus virtus, sed opes virtute parantur.

Source: Marcus Antonius Muretus (1526-1585), Juvenilia. Meter: Dactylic Hexameter. Note the wonderful chiastic inversions in the second line: opibus virtus || opes virtute, where there is a chiastic arrangement of the cases (ablative-nominative || nominative-ablative), while the words themselves are in the same order.

The vocabulary is keyed to the DCC Latin Vocabulary list. There is only one word in this poem that is not on the DCC list:

praeferō, praeferre: put before, prefer

amor -ōris m.: love
nōn: not
ops opis f.: assistance, resources
paro -āre: prepare, acquire; parātus -a -um, ready
sed: but
semper: always, ever
studium -ī n.: eagerness, zeal
virtūs -ūtis f.: valor, manliness, virtue
